So . . . you’re an EARTH. 🌱 That means you’re The Builder. You’re probably the person asking, “Okay, but how is this actually going to work?” Measurements. Construction. Materials. Details. Process. You understand something every designer eventually has to learn: a great idea still has to become a real product. And that Earth energy can be a HUGE advantage when it comes to product development and working with manufacturers. But there’s a little trap here too. Being detail-oriented doesn’t automatically mean the details are being communicated clearly. You may know exactly what you mean when you look at your sketch, but your manufacturer only knows what you’ve actually given them. And if you’re an Earth, there’s a good chance you’ve thought through a lot. The construction. The measurements. The finishing. Maybe three different ways something could be done. Maybe even a few things that don’t really need this much thought yet. 👀 That’s where your strength can turn into overthinking. Your manufacturer doesn’t need access to every thought you’ve had about the design. They need clear instructions for making it correctly. They can’t see the construction method you pictured in your head, know which measurement is especially important, or recognize the finishing detail you assumed was obvious. For Earth designers, the challenge usually isn’t noticing the details. It’s turning what you know about your design into clear, usable instructions. So here’s a quick test: could someone who has never spoken to you look at the information you’ve provided and understand what you want made? If the answer is, “Well . . . I’d probably have to explain a few things . . .” 👀, there may still be some gaps. And those gaps can turn into extra emails, unnecessary back-and-forth, misunderstandings, additional samples and potentially expensive mistakes. This is where fashion technology becomes less about being “techy” and more about communication. A good tech pack helps answer important questions before your manufacturer has to ask them. And for my fellow Earth designers, there’s another side to this: the goal isn’t to document every possible detail on the planet. 😂 It’s to communicate the right details clearly enough for someone else to execute your vision. That distinction matters. And if this is the part of the process where you tend to get stuck, that’s exactly what we work through inside Creating a Fashion Tech Pack. I walk you through how to organize and communicate the information a manufacturer needs to understand your design and move it toward production. So yes, your attention to detail is absolutely a superpower. 🌱 Just make sure the details that matter aren’t living only in your head. P.S. New here or missed the original Fashion Elements email? You can find your element here and see whether you’re FIRE, WATER, AIR or EARTH. 🔥🌊🌬️🌱 And if you’re an EARTH, hit reply and tell me. I want to see how many of my Builders are out there. |
