Why I'm not worried about the next "game-changing" fashion tool

Every few months, Reader, there's a new "revolutionary" tool that's going to "change everything" in fashion design.

New AI platforms, updated 3D software, AR fitting tools, blockchain design platforms. The list goes on.

And often, I get asked: "Should I learn this new tool, too?"

My answer is always the same: What's your foundation?

Here's what I've learned after 20+ years of watching design tools evolve:

The designers who thrive aren't those chasing every new technology. They're the ones who've built a strategic, layered approach to their digital toolkit.

Layer 1: Creative Foundation Hand sketching, design thinking, understanding garment construction. These fundamentals never become obsolete; they become more valuable as technology advances.

Layer 2: Technical Communication 2D tools like Illustrator for precise flats, clean line work, professional presentation. This is where your creative ideas become communicable to others.

Right now, I'm seeing a lot of excitement around AI and how strengthens 3D design tools (and rightfully so—you can really take your 3D garments even further with AI). But the designers getting the best results? They're the ones who already have a strong 2D technical foundation.

Their 3D work is more precise because they understand garment construction and how to communicate design details. Their AI prompts are more effective because they know what they're looking for.

The foundation amplifies everything else.
