Could someone understand your tech pack without you [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]?

Here’s a simple test for your tech pack, Reader: If you handed it to someone who had never spoken to you about the design, would they understand exactly what you want? If the answer is “maybe,” there are probably still some gaps in the way the design is being communicated. A good tech pack should help someone understand your garment without needing you to explain every decision along the way. Here are a few things I’d check: Can they clearly understand what the garment should look like? Your flats should show the front and back of the garment clearly, along with the important design details your manufacturer needs to see. This is one of the reasons there's an introduction to Illustrator module in my Creating a Fashion Tech Pack course. The sketch is the visual foundation of the document, so if that part is unclear, everything else becomes harder to interpret. Can they identify the materials and trims you want used? Fabric, zippers, buttons, elastic, labels, hardware, and other components should be documented clearly enough that your manufacturer isn’t left guessing. In the course, I walk through how to organize this information so it becomes part of the technical story of the garment, not just a list of random details. Can they understand how the garment should be measured and constructed? This is where measurements, placement specifications, and other technical details become especially important. You may know exactly what “cropped,” “oversized,” or “high-waisted” means to you, but your manufacturer needs something more specific to work from. That’s really the purpose of a tech pack.
